Dia de Fico (meaning I Will Remain) happened January 9, 1822. During this day, Dom Pedro was asked to return to Portugal. The people of Portugal were concered with what was happening in Brazil regarding political emancipation. Then, the Liberal Party of Brazil collected nearly 8,000 signatures demangin the retention of Dom Pedro in Brazil.

This is when Dom Pedro said one of his most famous lines: "If it's for the good of all and the happiness of the nation, I am ready, tell the people that I am!"

Maria Leopldina was Dom Pedro´s wife, she sent him a letter that recomended and advised him to make Brazil independent. The letter was sent on September 7, 1822 and also included a warning to Dom Pedro about the consequences that could arrise after making Brazil independent. One passage of the letter said "The fruit is ready, it´s time to harvest", refering to the timely and adecuate chance to declare Brazil independent.

This is important because it helps strengthen Brazil's position towards the seeking of independence and distancing itself from Portugal. Dom Pedro´s speech in 1822 inspired the creation of a whole new goverment in which the people were represented. The unfair taxes and political policies that the Portuguese goverment had previously established, upset the people enough for them to speak out and demand change. The rise of Dom Pedro as king of Brazil was backed and supported by the natives Brazilians who had a whole new ideology of Dom Pedro´s new goverment.
